Driver / Warehouse assistant

This role is in our Furniture Services Department


Purpose of the Role

You will safely load and transport donated furniture between our warehouses and customers’ homes. The role entails being able to work closely with other colleagues, including volunteers and work placements. You will act with honesty, courtesy and provide excellent levels of customer care at all times. On occasion, you’ll need to work in the warehouse, serving customers, taking payments and helping with enquiries. You will also test electrical equipment to PAT testing standards. You will receive the necessary training and equipment to be able to perform this role. We need you to be cooperative, punctual and responsive to all reasonable requests from your supervisor

Key responsibilities, tasks, authority and accountabilities

The following criteria is not listed in any particular order of importance, as all areas identified require the individual to undertake the defined responsibilities and tasks with equal diligence and meet the desired and appropriate performance level.

1 To be able to lift and transport goods in a safe and responsible manner, including carrying furniture and other goods of different weights up and down stairs, in and out of buildings, safe use of vehicle lifts and other equipment as supplied to you

2 To engage in all aspects of the CT Furniture service including collections, deliveries, removals, house clearances and general warehouse duties

3 To engage with customers in an open, courteous and friendly manner, doing your very best to keep to appointment times in all cases

4 To ensure all volunteers and work placements working under your responsibility, comply with the Charity’s Health & Safety rules when in the warehouse, van and customers’ homes

5 To ensure all volunteers and work placements are properly supervised when entering customers’ homes. This will include making sure vulnerable adults and children are safeguarded against unnecessary risks

6 To actively promote Gift Aid to all eligible customers, making sure all the necessary paperwork is completed accurately

7 To keep your van clean and tidy at all times. Paperwork and rubbish is removed each day and personal information is not left in view

8 Carry out daily vehicle checks and the appropriate paperwork is completed and given to your supervisor. Any faults are reported immediately

9 You will drive in a safe and proficient manner, following the Charity’s rules, keep to speed limits, follow the highway code and show respect and courtesy to other road users

10 To cover warehouse/shop duties in periods of absence or holidays. This may involve working at different locations within the Midlands, at different times to your normal hours

11 To serve customers in the warehouse/shop, providing excellent customer service, promoting Gift Aid and processing payments through the EPOS system and card machine

12 You will carry out PAT testing of electrical items as and when requested by your supervisor

13 To work within the rules and policies set out within the Employee Handbook; Safe Driver Handbook and Community Transport’s Health and Safety policy

14 To undertake any other duties in order to meet your team and organisation objectives as requested by your supervisor 

15 To actively work towards the achievement of sales targets, doing your very best to gain the best price for the goods you sell

16 You will always work flexibly to meet the needs of the business as required

You will possess:

* Experience of working in a retail environment

* Experience of record keeping & cash handling

* Ability to communicate effectively and work in a motivated team

* Have B entitlement on your driving licence, with less than 3 penalty points

* Demonstrate an excellent level of health and safety and manual handling, with regard movement of goods in and out of vehicles and buildings

* Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the business including evening and regular weekend work.
